The attempted assassination on leading presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and prominent members of the coalition opposition party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), remains utterly condemnable and unacceptable to millions of Nigerians.

Such an attack on the residence of a former state governor, John Odigie Oyegun, highlights the grave collapse of security in a country already globally notorious for its thriving kidnapping industry and the unabated infestation of Jihadi terrorists.
Worse still, as many have noted, this assassination attempt is strongly linked to the increasing rhetoric of violence openly declared by ranking officials of the Edo State Government, including the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, who belong to the ruling party, APC.
At the Federal level, silence since the attack is indeed deafening. Nigeria has officially entered a dangerous phase of uniparty and camouflaged democracy where rising opposition voices are silenced by the gun. This is unacceptable.
Nigeria’s President Tinubu, must, as a matter of urgency, strengthen its commitment to the continuous security of citizens’ lives irrespective of ballot choice or political affiliation.
