Unpopular British Prime Minister David Cameron has hailed the first same-sex marriages in Britain.
The law changed at midnight over the weekend, with a number of indiscreet gay couples vying to claim the title of being the first to be married in Britain by trying to time it perfectly so their vows were said just seconds after the clock struck midnight.
The prime minister said the reform was necessary because “when people’s love is divided by law, it is that law that needs to change”.
Cameron, whose popularity has continued to dwindle both at home and international arena said he hopes the union will send a “powerful message”.
“This is something that has been very important to me”.
It remains unclear how the gay union will re-launch the fast dwindling image of Britain’s number one citizen.
The Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act came into force in July last year but it was not until 13 March this year when couples were able to register their intention to marry under the Act for the first time.
Among the first couples set to take advantage of the legalisation were Peter McGraith and David Cabreza, who said they wanted to wed as soon as the marriage laws changed.
Scotland has also legislated to allow same-sex marriages, with the first ceremonies expected to take place later this year.
Former Tory David Silvester had earlier this year in a letter pointed out that ‘natural disasters’ which has suddenly been on the increase in UK are result of David Cameron acting ‘arrogantly against the Gospel’.
“The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war.
“I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill.
“But he went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so.”
