CHECKING THE EXCESSES OF ELECTION RIGGING IN NIGERIA’S 2019 ELECTIONS: THE NEED FOR ADOPTION OF THE OPEN BALLOT SYSTEM

With barely 3-months to the elections of Africa’s most populous country Nigeria, it’s increasingly worrisome that Nigeria’s ruling party the All Progressive Congress (APC) may have perfected a scheme to circumvent the electoral process and perpetuate themselves in power. The recently held poll in Ekiti and Osun State, Nigeria is clear testament of how flawed Nigeria’s electoral system is. If these excesses are not checked, the opposition might be in for a shocker come 2019 as the ruling party may have fine-tuned arrangements with results of the elections already in place and only waiting to be announced from Nigeria’s Government House.

The onus therefore lies on the opposition to do one of the two to salvage Nigeria’s democracy:

  1. call for an open ballot system otherwise known as “Option A4” where voters will opening queue behind the candidate they support at polling units; or
  2. invite international organisations like the United Nations and its affiliates to conduct the elections.

This is the only way the elections in Nigeria would be free and fair as arrangements may have been concluded by the incumbent to ensure victory with or without elections. The opposition parties must therefore, be very vigilant to help curb the excesses of the ruling party who already have Nigeria’s electoral umpire the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under their whims and caprices. Nigerian Military , Nigerian Air Force , Nigerian Police FORCE , and other respected agencies are also advised to shun taking sides in the forthcoming 2019 general elections in Nigeria. It would be very shameful for the entire Africa if elections in Nigeria were to be rigged by agents of State in Nigeria’s polity for the umpteenth time. Call for action
